*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has reported that light vehicle exports have fallen by 6.04% in the first quarter of 2025 as compared to the same period of the previous year. According to Inegi, 775,866 light vehicles were exported in Q1 2025, down from 825,707 in Q1 2024. However, in March alone 296,964 light vehicles were exported, up 3.83% year-on-year. Inegi noted that the US remained the largest export market for Mexican vehicles in the first quarter, with 643,894 light vehicles exported to the country over the period, 83.0% of the total. The decline in light vehicle exports in the Q1 comes as the US government led by President
Donald Trump imposed 25% tariffs
on imports of vehicles and vehicle parts on 3 April, raising concerns over the impact of Mexico’s automotive industry. Both light vehicle sales and production were up year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025, with 365,025 light vehicles sold (+3.33%) and 973,485 light vehicles produced (+4.80%). In March alone, 127,360 light vehicles were sold, up 1.27% year-on-year, while 338,669 light vehicles were produced, up 12.15%.
