*Uruguay’s President
Yamandú Orsi has met with his Panamanian counterpart
José Raúl Mulino in Panama City, in his first official overseas trip since
taking office on 1 March. During the meeting, Orsi recognised the two visits that Mulino has made to Uruguay in recent months and referred to the latest summit of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) trade bloc, comprising Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia, in which Panama’s entrance as an ‘associate state’ was formalised. Orsi added that Uruguayan businesses were interested in establishing relations with Panama, particularly in the rice sector, to trade goods and services and also to exchange experiences to improve production processes. For his part, Mulino stated that Panama was seeking opportunities for integration with the South and thanked Orsi for choosing Panama for his first official trip overseas. According to a statement from Uruguay’s government this was the first official visit by a Uruguayan president to Panama in 16 years. The next stop on Orsi’s tour is Honduras, where he will meet with President
Xiomara Castro and attend a meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac).
