*Venezuela’s electricity ministry has announced a reduction in working hours for public officials in response to electricity shortages caused by low water levels at hydroelectric power stations. For six weeks from today (24 March), public administration workers employed by ministries, regional and municipal governments, and other public sector branches will have a reduced working day of 8am-12.30pm, with exceptions for essential workers. The electricity ministry also announced a ‘1x1’ system for the same workers,
“consisting of one working day for one non-working day”. Venezuela is the latest country in the Andean region to struggle with energy shortages caused by drought. Ecuador is still dealing with a major
electricity crisis that has lasted over a year and forced the imposition of rolling blackouts, while Colombia
has also been affected to a lesser extent.
