*Bolivia’s hydrocarbons minister, Alejandro Gallardo, has blamed renewed fuel shortages on low reserves of hard currency which are restricting fuel imports from abroad. In recent days, queues have formed outside petrol stations and the agricultural sector has warned that the fuel shortages could impact the harvesting of key crops such as soya. Gallardo yesterday met with representatives from the mining sector who have also expressed concern over fuel supplies. Speaking at a press conference, he said: “our problem is obtaining hard currency to pay suppliers for fuel imports”. Gallardo called on congress to approve new loans to enable more fuel imports and said that President Luis Arce’s government was also looking at other financing possibilities.
