CHILE-REGION: Gov’t seeks regional allies on anti-gang policies

Justice Minister Jaime Gajardo Falcón and a Chilean delegation of government officials travelled to Brazil on 30 January and to Colombia on 3 February to discuss prison policies. Throughout South America, authorities have long expressed concern that mismanagement of prisons runs the risk of the inmates taking over and running facilities as a base from where leaders of organised crime groups can continue operating their illicit businesses. Indeed, powerful transnational criminal groups such as Venezuelan criminal organisation Tren de Aragua were formed initially by groups of prison inmates.
