MEXICO: Government moves on housing reform

One of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s major campaign pledges was the construction of 1m new affordable homes. She moved one step closer to beginning work on this ambitious pledge on 14 February, when the senate approved reforms to the law governing the Instituto del Fondo Nacional de la Vivienda para los Trabajadores (Infonavit), a federal government fund that provides housing-related mortgage services for workers, and the national labour law. Under the reforms, Sheinbaum seeks to create a new system that boosts workers’ access to housing. However, corruption concerns surrounding Infonavit and a perceived lack of transparency regarding the new system have drawn criticism from the political opposition.
