*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has reported that 119,811 light vehicles were sold in the domestic market in January, reflecting a 5.9% increase compared with the same month in 2024. Vehicle production also saw a modest rise, with 312,257 light vehicles produced in January 2025, representing a 1.7% increase year-on-year. However, exports fell 13.7%, with Mexico exporting 219,414 light vehicles in the first month of the year, nearly 35,000 fewer than in January 2024. Inegi noted that the US was the main destination market for light vehicles in January, accounting for 83.6% of the total. The decline in exports comes amid growing concerns over potential US tariffs impacting the automotive and auto parts industry, as US President Donald Trump announced tariffs of 25% on all Mexican imports on 1 February, a measure since temporarily suspended, as well as having threatened sector-specific tariffs on vehicle imports.
