*Nicaragua’s authoritarian government led by President Daniel Ortega has awarded two more mining lots, both to Chinese firm Brother Metal. According to the official gazette, which published the details of the concessions, the mining & energy ministry (MEM) has authorised one lot spanning 24,612 hectares (ha) in Dipilto, Macuelizo, Santa María municipalities, in Nueva Segovia department, and Somoto municipality (Madriz), and another spanning 6,969 ha in the municipalities of San Pedro del Norte, Cinco Pinos, Santo Tomás del Norte and Somotillo, Chinandega department. As of August 2024, the government had authorised 248 mining concessions, with 115 requests pending.
