Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has submitted a constitutional reform bill to congress to prohibit the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) corn. The reform builds on a decree published by Sheinbaum’s predecessor and mentor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), in 2023, which banned the use of GM corn in tortillas and dough. The decree was a bone of contention between Mexico and the US, which successfully won a dispute on the matter under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) in December last year. Forging ahead with a constitutional reform despite this ruling will no doubt further fuel trade tensions with the US, which are already running high in the wake of President Donald Trump’s pledges to impose punitive tariffs on Mexican imports.End of preview - This article contains approximately 761 words.
