Venezuela’s presidential elections of 28 July 2024, were widely seen as fraudulent, undermining the government’s credibility. Yet apparently undeterred by claims that they were neither free nor fair, the left-wing administration of President Nicolás Maduro has just called for a new round of parliamentary and regional elections to be held on 27 April, which is to be followed (on as-yet-undisclosed dates) by mayoral and council elections. In addition, there will be other popular consultations and possible referenda on constitutional reforms.
