Mexico’s Sheinbaum responds to Trump’s initial measures

Mexico: On 21 January Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said that “the people of Mexico can be sure that we will always defend our sovereignty and our independence”, adding that it is “important to always keep a cool head and refer to signed decrees beyond actual speeches”. President Sheinbaum was responding to a string of presidential actions announced the previous day by the new US President Donald Trump upon taking office. These include actions which declare a state of emergency in the US-Mexico border area, allow military action in response to a migrant “invasion” and pave the way for mass deportations while one notable memorandum gives Trump the power to raise tariffs on imports of Mexican products into the US. Trump has suggested a 25% tariff could be imposed as early as 1 February. In response to the tariff-related threat Sheinbaum said she would respond “step by step”, noting that a review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) between the US, Mexico and Canada was already planned in 2026. As regards Trump’s moves to address illegal migration, she noted that some of the actions were similar to those taken under his first presidency (2017-2021) such as the declaration of the national emergency which he did in 2019. She also said it was necessary to address migrants’ needs in a “humanitarian” way.
