ECUADOR: Noboa curtails leave of absence

Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa cut short his leave of absence on 12 January after the murder of a mayor in the southern province of El Oro. Noboa, who had stepped aside to enable him to campaign for re-election on 9 February, said that the assassination of Eber Ponce, the mayor of Arenillas, was a sign that organised criminal groups were intent on ratcheting up their attacks on the state in order to “spread terror among the public” during the electoral campaign.
