MEXICO: Clamping down on fentanyl

Mexican authorities hailed the largest seizure of the synthetic opioid fentanyl in the country’s history on 3 December. The drug bust saw authorities seize over one tonne (t) of the drug, which has been driving overdose deaths in the US, and arrest three suspects. The operation was well timed, coming just days after US President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose heavy trade tariffs on Mexican imports if the government does not crack down on the flow of drugs, and particularly fentanyl, crossing the border.
