BRAZIL: Spectre of putschist legacy looms over military
In November and December, the federal police (PF) arrested military officers who are believed to have been involved in a plot in 2022 to overturn the election defeat that year of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023). The PF released a report recommending criminal charges against Bolsonaro and other suspected conspirators in a possible coup plot. Most of the suspects implicated in the PF report were military personnel, sparking concerns over the politicisation of the armed forces and the institution’s history of insurrectionism.
