COLOMBIA: Mancuso sentenced for war crimes

Salvatore Mancuso, the former deputy commander of the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) paramilitary group, was sentenced on 27 November to 40 years in prison for crimes committed during Colombia’s internal conflict. Mancuso was convicted in the normal criminal justice system after losing an appeal to have his case heard by the transitional justice tribunal (JEP), under which he would have received a heavily reduced sentence in return for cooperating with prosecutors. It is unclear whether, now that he has been sentenced to decades in prison, Mancuso will uphold his previous promises to reveal the AUC’s connections with high-ranking officials in the military and the government of former president Álvaro Uribe (2002-2010).
