GUATEMALA: Arévalo lifts minimum wage

Guatemala’s left-of-centre government led by President Bernardo Arévalo claimed on 6 January that a new minimum wage increase could provide an important boost to economic growth. However, the country’s leading private sector lobby Comité de Asociaciones Agrícolas, Comerciales, Industriales y Financieras (Cacif) argued that the increase represented an “important challenge for the country’s economic and social stability”.
