El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele did not have to wait long. Less than a month after savaging a ban on metallic mining, Bukele celebrated the passage of a bill through the legislative assembly overturning its prohibition and authorising the resumption of mining exploration and exploitation. There was little doubt that the legislature would do Bukele’s bidding given that the overwhelming majority of deputies belong to his personalist Nuevas Ideas (NI) party.
