*Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will not be threatened by the recent resignation of Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the potential election of Conservative Party leader, Pierre Poilievre. According to polls and Canadian analysts, Poilievre’s Conservative Party is the leading party choice for the next election taking place this October. Poilievre has previously suggested he would be willing to negotiate a trade deal with the US that excludes Mexico.  Sheinbaum stated during her daily press conference on 7 January that “I do not think that anything will happen with the agreement”, noting that “Canada, the US and Mexico have all benefited a lot from the USMCA.” According to Sheinbaum, maintaining the agreement is not about “competition” but “complementarity” in the North American region. Indeed, speaking in December last year, Sheinbaum described the USMCA as “the only way to successfully face the economic and commercial competition with China.”
