*The office of Brazil’s solicitor general (AGU) has announced that Brazilian airlines Gol and Azul have reached agreements to settle tax debts it owes to the government. The debts to be settled total R$7.5bn (US$1.2bn) and were aggravated by the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, which heavily affected the aviation and tourism sectors. The recently agreed repayment plan stipulates that Gol, which filed for bankruptcy last year but continues to operate, will pay R$880m in up to 120 tranches. Meanwhile, Azul will make an immediate payment of R$36m and will later pay R$1.1bn in up to 120 tranches. Over the past week, the government has released figures suggesting that the aviation industry showed signs of recovery in 2024. On 1 January the ministry for ports and airports announced that São Paulo’s Guarulhos airport, Brazil’s largest airport, registered an annual record of 43.6m passengers last year.
