MEXICO: Sheinbaum prepares for US deportations

President Claudia Sheinbaum has urged the governors of Mexico’s northern states to begin preparations for a possible surge in deportations of Mexicans from the US after President-elect Donald Trump takes office on 20 January. Significant uncertainty surrounds the issue of mass deportations and the imposition of a 25% tariff on US imports from Mexico (and Canada) and whether this is a strong possibility or a tough negotiating stance adopted by Trump, but Sheinbaum has made it clear that the threat should be taken at face value.
