In brief: Argentina’s construction, industrial production down year-on-year

*Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released data for October showing declines in both construction activity and industrial production. Construction activity fell by 24.5% year-on-year, while industrial production decreased by 2% compared to the same month in 2023. Construction activity accumulated a 29% decrease over the first ten months of the year compared to the same period in 2023, while seasonally adjusted figures show a 4.0% drop in construction from the previous month. All 13 construction sectors experienced annual declines, with the most substantial decreases in bathroom ceramics (-51.2%) and granite and limestone slabs (-34.9%). The industrial manufacturing production index saw an accumulated decrease of 11.6% for the first ten months of 2023 compared to the same period in the previous year, and a seasonally adjusted fall of 0.8% in monthly terms. Seven of the nine industrial production categories experienced year-on-year decreases, the most significant of which were non-metallic minerals & basic metals (-13.7%) and metal products, machinery & equipment (-9.8%). The two categories to register yearly growth were food, drink & tobacco (+6.9%) and automobiles and other transport (+5.2%).
