In brief: Mexico’s Sheinbaum outlines social welfare spending

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that her government will dedicate over M$800bn (US$39.73bn) to social welfare programmes in 2025, a figure that she said was “historic”. Speaking from Oaxaca state in the south of Mexico, Sheinbaum stated that the funding would go towards pensions for the elderly, financial support for disabled people, educational scholarships, community healthcare provisions, and Sembrando Vida, the flagship tree-planting initiative of her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024). She also highlighted the launch of three new social welfare programmes in 2025 which will provide financial support for women between 60 and 64 years of age; universal scholarships for children in public schools; and home medical visits for the elderly and disabled people.
