Mexico bids farewell to autonomous agencies

Mexico’s congress has approved a constitutional reform to abolish seven autonomous regulatory agencies. The reform, first presented by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) in February, transfers the functions of the autonomous institutions to different government agencies. The ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) argues that the reform is necessary to streamline organisations and ensure a more efficient use of resources. However, the political opposition, private sector, and civil society organisations have raised concerns over a weakening of transparency, competition, and access to information, stating the reform is designed to further concentrate power in the hands of the executive.
