Uruguay: On 25 November US President
Joe Biden issued a statement congratulating Uruguay’s President-elect
Yamandú Orsi of the left-wing opposition Frente Amplio on his election victory
which took place on 24 November. President Biden also sent his congratulations to the people of Uruguay for “
their unyielding commitment to democracy as they successfully exercised the fundamental right to vote”. Orsi’s triumph will see the FA return to power just five years on from its long previous stint of three consecutive terms from 2005-2020. According to Biden’s statement, Uruguay “
has been at the vanguard of promoting democracy in the Americas, as well as leading in the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity (Apep) to invest in innovations that create opportunities for the middle class throughout the hemisphere”. Launched in June 2022 by President Biden, Apep aims to strengthen regional resilience, competitiveness, and sustainable investment, with a focus on stabilising migration flows as part of this. The statement adds that as President-elect Orsi prepares to take office in March, by which point the new US administration led by former president
Donald Trump (2017-2021) will be in office, Biden is “
confident our two countries will continue our work together to build more secure and prosperous futures for our people”.
