ARGENTINA: A shift from diplomatic moderation
Last month President Javier Milei fired his foreign minister, Diana Mondino, replacing her with Argentina’s ambassador to the US, Gerardo Werthein. The move came after relations between the two had reportedly been deteriorating for months. Mondino’s tenure as the chief of Argentine diplomacy was marked by efforts to ease spats caused by Milei, who has repeatedly insulted various world leaders with whom he is ideologically opposed. The ministerial change is expected to signal a greater push by Milei to align Argentina with right-wing allies such as the US president-elect, former president Donald Trump (2017-2021).
