In brief: Brazil’s job creation down in October

*Brazil’s labour ministry has released the latest figures from its national employment registry (Novo caged), which showed a net 132,714 new jobs created in October, with 2.22m new hires and 2.09m dismissals. October this year was the month which registered the lowest net job creation in 2024 so far. The latest net job creation figure is down from the net 251,560 new jobs in September and from 187,070 jobs in October last year. The accumulated net jobs created in the 12 months until October 2024 totalled 1.79m, up 22.7% compared to the previous 12-month period. In terms of regional variation, the south-eastern state of São Paulo registered the highest job creation, with a net 47,255 new jobs created in October, followed by the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, with a net 14,115 new jobs. The sector that registered the highest job creation nationwide in October was services (+71,217), while civil construction and agriculture registered net losses of 767 and 5,757 jobs respectively.
