To Ecuador’s security and energy crises add a political crisis to the mix. For months, President Daniel Noboa has been wrestling with the quandary of what to do about his re-election bid next February, when by law he must step down to campaign to avoid conflict of interest. Vice President Verónica Abad is waiting in the wings but that is precisely where he wants to keep her after an acrimonious falling out soon after he took office. Noboa suspects Abad would govern for the opposition and undermine his campaign. His government suspended her this week in controversial circumstances, which the national assembly rejected, now pending review by the constitutional court. Noboa’s re-election bid is already faltering, with no end in sight to an acute energy crisis which forced him to reshuffle his cabinet and send his erstwhile government minister cap in hand to Colombia to seek supplies, and a fresh prison massacre attesting to the recurrent security dilemma.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1822 words.
