PERU: Transport workers demand action on extortion

Peruvian transport workers ground the capital Lima to a halt for several days in September and October as they went on strike to demand urgent action against extortion by criminal gangs. The strikes came after at least three bus drivers were murdered by extortionists in Lima during August and September. President Dina Boluarte’s government has responded by declaring a state of emergency that has seen troops deployed on the streets of the capital, and by drafting new legislation that would enable extortion to be prosecuted as “urban terrorism”.
