US hosts ministerial on migration pact

Colombia/Region: On 25 September US Secretary of State Antony Blinken hosted the fourth Los Angeles Declaration Ministerial on the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection in New York with foreign ministers and senior representatives from the other 21 endorsing countries. This is a shared implementation plan promoted by the US to advance a regional response to migration management across the Western Hemisphere. At the meeting Blinken announced that Colombia would assume the role of rotating country chair over the next year and would host the fifth Los Angeles Declaration Ministerial in 2025. At the meeting Blinken highlighted efforts to make it easier for migrants who are already in-country to obtain legal status. He cited as an example the fact that “governments throughout the region are helping Venezuelans acquire lawful residency status”, adding that “Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru are at the forefront – advancing measures to fully incorporate migrants into their receiving communities and economies”. Blinken also announced “more than US$686m in new humanitarian, development, economic, and security assistance to support partner countries to respond to urgent humanitarian needs, strengthen humane enforcement efforts, expand lawful pathways, and facilitate the regularisation and integration of migrants within the region”. With this announcement, the US has now committed over US$1.2bn under the Los Angeles Declaration framework in 2024 alone.
