In brief: Brazil makes progress on ‘smart factories’ initiative

*Brazil’s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who also serves as the minister for industry and trade, has announced that the government will invest R$160m (US$29m) to digitalise the factories of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This marks the latest stage of the ‘Brasil Mais Produtivo’ (‘more productive Brazil’) programme, one of the pillars of the government’s initiative launched in January which aims to revitalise the country’s industrial sector. According to a government press release, the investment in ‘smart factories’ will aim to support 360 projects, which could benefit over 8,000 SMEs. The companies selected during this phase of Brasil Mais Produtivo will be analysed with a ‘Smart Industry Readiness Index’ calculation tool to identify what each company needs in order to make its factories more productive. Possible technological upgrades could include cloud computing services, artificial intelligence (AI), 3D printing, or ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) digital sensors.
