*Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has promulgated an updated ‘Lei Geral do Turismo’, which will enact a series of new policies and initiatives to boost the country’s tourism sector. The legislation was approved by congress in August and mainly aims to improve the bureaucracy, infrastructure, and funding mechanisms for the national tourism industry. The government is seeking to simplify the process for local businesses to sign up to the official registry of tourism service providers (Cadastur), which will also prioritise the integration of small-scale, family-run farms into the supply chains of food and hospitality service providers. Measures to address the informality of the sector are expected to protect tourists at risk of being scammed by fake tour guides, non-existent hotels and businesses, or other fraudulent services. Other terms of the legislation include measures to support the aviation sector, such as the authorisation of more loans for Brazilian airlines to expand their fleets and replenish their stocks of jet fuel. The funding for airlines and airports will also prioritise flights to the north of the country in order to boost tourism to the Amazon region.
