*Remittances sent to El Salvador by expatriates totalled US$4.76bn in the first seven months of the year, according to figures released by the central bank. This constitutes an increase of 1% on the same period last year. The figure for July was US$704m. According to data from El Salvador’s multipurpose household survey (EHPM in the Spanish acronym) for 2023, some 1.62m people in El Salvador benefit from remittances, just over one-quarter of the national population. They are primarily sent from family members in the US, where over 2m Salvadoreans live.
