MEXICO: Insecurity drives displacement in Chiapas

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador visited the municipality of La Concordia in the southern state of Chiapas on 2 August. La Concordia, like many other areas of Chiapas – particularly those close to the border with Guatemala – has seen a surge in high-profile violent incidents in recent months. López Obrador, who was in the municipality to inaugurate a new infrastructure project, said the efforts of his Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) government to boost development in Chiapas would help to pacify the region, in keeping with his root causes-focused security strategy.
