VENEZUELA: González arrest warrant takes repression to new heights

Having refused to leave office despite signs that he lost the 28 July presidential election by a wide margin, Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro is reaching for devices that had hitherto lain unused in his toolkit of political repression. On 2 September a judge issued an arrest warrant for his opposition rival Edmundo González, who is accused of six alleged crimes relating to the election and its aftermath.
