Venezuela’s Maduro overhauls cabinet following legal ‘certification’ of victory

It seems increasingly likely that Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro will ride out the unprecedented pressure to stand down that he faced following the disputed 28 July presidential election, which the opposition insists was won by Edmundo González. On 22 August the supreme court (TSJ) ‘certified’ Maduro’s win – a largely meaningless gesture, given the court’s clear bias and the ongoing refusal to publish the full results, but one which Maduro will use to try and turn the page on the election. Maduro is now looking ahead to a further six years in office, announcing a sweeping cabinet reshuffle on 27 August that saw some of his closest allies rewarded.
