*Honduras’ foreign ministry has announced that an early harvest agreement (EHA) with China will take effect on 1 September, allowing Honduran shrimp and other seafood products to enter the Chinese market duty-free. This agreement, which precedes a full free trade agreement (FTA) currently under negotiation, marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral trade relations. Approved by the Honduran congress in July, the EHA has already facilitated the shipment of two containers of shrimp to China, marking the start of what is expected to be a major export channel for Honduran seafood. The country has prepared nine shrimp packing plants certified for export to the Chinese market. The deal also opens opportunities for other key Honduran exports like melon, tobacco, bananas, and cacao. The two countries established bilateral relations in March 2023 after Honduras severed ties with its long-time ally Taiwan in search of Chinese trade and investment.
