In brief: Guatemala boosts ties with Taiwan

*Guatemala’s deputy foreign minister, Julio Eduardo Orozco Pérez, has met Taiwan’s foreign minister, Lin Chia-lung, during a visit to Taipei aimed at boosting trade and bilateral relations. Orozco arrived in Taiwan on 5 August for a five-day visit. According to a statement by Taiwan’s foreign ministry, the two “exchanged views on a wide range of issues, including bilateral industrial, economic, and trade exchanges and several cooperation projects.”  It cites Lin as highlighting that the Taiwan government was “drawing up cooperation initiatives in line with the policy priorities” of Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arévalo. These included “promoting Taiwanese investments in textile and circular economy supply chains in Guatemala, introducing smart technology to further enhance Guatemala’s agricultural production environment, and establishing a bilateral carbon trading system”. He also thanked the government of Guatemala for backing Taiwan’s efforts to participate in the World Health Assembly, the decision-making body of the World Health Organisation (WHO), and other international organisations. Along with Belize, Guatemala is the only other country in Central America, previously a bastion of support for Taiwan, to maintain relations with Taipei, after Honduras became the latest country to make the switch to mainland China last year.
