GUYANA: Opposition struggling for unity with elections in sight

Guyana will go to the polls within 18 months, most likely in November 2025. The last election, in March 2020, was arguably the most important since independence given the imminent flood of oil money due to transform the economy. Certainly that was the view of then president David Granger (2015-2020), who did everything within his power to remain in office, from overlooking the constitutional requirement to hold an election within three months of the December 2018 vote of no confidence, to the legal challenges to the outcome of the March 2020 general election which saw him cling on to power for another five months.
