In brief: Mexico’s trade deficit narrows in first half of 2024

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures which show that the country recorded a trade deficit of US$1.04bn in June 2024, compared to a surplus of US$58m in the same month of 2023 and a surplus of US$1.99bn in May. Exports in June fell by 5.7% year-on-year to US$48.87bn, while imports decreased by 3.6% to US$49.91bn. In the first six months of the year, Mexico recorded a trade deficit of US$5.50bn, down from a deficit of US$6.51bn in the same period of 2023. From January to June, exports increased by 2.6% year-on-year, reaching US$299.39bn, while imports increased by 2.2% to US$304.88bn.
