ARGENTINA: France spat deepens Milei rift with Villarruel

Argentina’s Vice President Victoria Villarruel took over the reins of power on 25 July as President Javier Milei departed for France to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. Milei might well have been reluctant to relinquish them, however briefly, amid escalating tensions with Villarruel in recent days. The most recent source of these tensions was a social media post by Villarruel in defence of Argentina’s national football team amid the furore surrounding the release of a video during its celebrations upon winning the Copa America football tournament on 14 July, including a song directed at France which was unequivocally condemned by the French football federation.
