Boric in crosshairs as Chile’s insecurity rises

Chile’s President Gabriel Boric’s approval rating has suffered a sharp drop in the space of just one week. A spate of homicides in the Santiago Metropolitan Region has reinforced the public perception that insecurity in Chile is rife and the suspicion that his government is soft on crime. In a bid to address such concerns, Boric, who has found himself coming under fire from both the right and the left, announced the formation of a joint task force designed to take the fight to organised crime in the capital and promised to construct a maximum-security prison to house the top leaders of criminal groups operating in Chile.
