GUATEMALA: Attorney general challenges Arévalo and allies

The sentencing this week of anti-corruption prosecutor Virginia Laparra, on charges widely considered trumped up, has drawn international outrage. It is the latest sign of the continued challenge facing Guatemala’s new president, Bernardo Arévalo, as he seeks to make good on his pledge to take on the ‘pacto de corruptos’ network of institutional corruption, with which the discredited head of the attorney general’s office, Consuelo María Porras, is associated.
