*Argentina’s government led by far-right President Javier Milei has published a decree aimed at opening up the country’s aviation sector. According to a government statement the reform allows for more routes to be authorised and will simplify the authorisation procedures for smaller aircraft as well as enabling more airline companies to operate, among other things. It says that its ultimate aim is for Argentina to have “better connectivity, increased flight frequencies, and new companies… with more competitive tariffs” which would boost tourism in Argentina’s provinces. The government statement also notes that the Milei administration, which took office in December, has reached various ‘open-skies agreements’ with countries including Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Chile, and Uruguay, as well as with Panama and Canada with more such arrangements to be inked in the next few months. According to regulator data cited by newswire Reuters, state-owned airline Aerolíneas Argentinas operated 62% of domestic flights in May, followed by local low-cost airline Flybondi (with 26% of the domestic market) and Chile’s Jetsmart (11%).
