In brief: Mexico’s Sheinbaum reveals new rail plans

*Mexico’s President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum has unveiled plans for two new passenger train lines: one spanning 581km from Mexico City (CDMX) to Guadalajara, the capital of the western state of Jalisco, via Querétaro, the capital of the eponymous state, and the city of Irapuato, Guanajuato state. The other will run 1,143km from CDMX to Nuevo Laredo city in the northern state of Tamaulipas via San Luis Potosí (San Luis Potosí state) and Monterrey, the capital of Nuevo León state. She suggested that construction on the two may begin in October 2024 with completion for the first expected by May 2029 and the second, by December 2029. She also announced plans to extend a suburban branch rail line that will connect CDMX with the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) near CDMX, which was inaugurated in March 2022, to Pachuca, the capital of Hidalgo state, spanning some 150km. She suggested that this could be carried out from October 2024 to August 2029.
