HONDURAS: Gov’t declares climate emergency

In late May Honduras’s leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) government led by President Xiomara Castro issued a resolution declaring a state of climate emergency, with the aim of defending protected areas and water production zones. Honduras is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world in relation to the impacts of climate change, and the resolution sets out various actions such as establishing a new commission tasked with eliminating deforestation. Government efforts to address the environmental crisis nonetheless comes as institutions like the Organization of American States (OAS) continue to highlight the dangers facing activists seeking to protect the environment.
