In brief: Mexico mobilises ahead of Hurricane Beryl

*Mexico’s federal government has deployed over 8,500 personnel to Quintana Roo state in preparation for Hurricane Beryl, the first major storm of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which has already devastated parts of the Caribbean. Speaking yesterday Laura Velázquez Alzúa, the head of the national civil protection commission (CPNC), said that the deployment includes soldiers, national guard (GN) officers, and navy personnel. Quintana Roo, a major tourist destination, has opened 112 temporary shelters to accommodate nearly 21,000 people. Hurricane Beryl, currently a Category 4 storm, is expected to make landfall in Quintana Roo tonight (4 July) or in the early hours of tomorrow, as a Category 2 storm, bringing heavy rains, and strong winds.
