In brief: US sanctions executive running flights into Nicaragua

*The US Department of State has announced visa restrictions against an executive of a charter flight transportation company for facilitating irregular migration to the US via Nicaragua from outside the Western Hemisphere. The statement, which did not offer details about the identity of the individual, said that such companies were “preying on vulnerable migrants by operating services designed primarily to facilitate irregular migration” to the US, while stating that Nicaragua’s government led by President Daniel Ortega “continues to financially benefit from the exploitation of vulnerable migrants”. This comes after the US placed visa restrictions on over 250 members of Nicaragua’s government and sanctioned three companies operating in the country in May for their roles in supporting the Ortega government in its “attacks on human rights and fundamental freedoms”, including the “profiting off of vulnerable migrants”. The latest visa restriction was imposed in accordance with a State Department policy announced in February targeting owners, executives, and senior officials of charter flight, ground, and maritime transportation companies providing services designed for use primarily by those looking to migrate irregularly to the US. This superseded a previous policy implemented in November 2023 targeting individuals running charter flights into Nicaragua specifically.
