BRAZIL: Former Lava Jato judge keeps senate seat
The top electoral court (TSE) concluded an impeachment trial on 21 May in which it ruled in favour of Senator Sergio Moro, affiliated with the centre-right party União Brasil (União). Moro stood accused of excessive campaign spending in the 2022 congressional election, but all seven TSE judges decided to absolve him of the charges. Media speculation had been building on whether the former judge who oversaw the Lava Jato corruption probe would lose his senate seat, but his political career remains intact, as the prosecution has stated that it will not appeal the TSE ruling.
