Attacks on candidates running for local seats left at least 15 people dead in Mexico’s southern state of Chiapas between 16 and 19 May. The incidents, which took place in the municipalities of La Concordia, Villa Corzo, Mapastepec, and Rincón Chamula, came shortly after bishops in the state warned that certain areas of Chiapas did not have the necessary conditions to host elections due to high levels of violence.
