Susana Muhamad has urged the country’s departmental and municipal authorities to accelerate their preparations for the La Niña climate phenomenon. Saying that there is a 70% chance that La Niña will arrive in July, Muhamad warned that the country’s Caribbean, Pacific, and Andean highland regions may face record rainfall in the coming weeks, while the Amazonian and Orinoquía regions are facing drought. Currently, 613 municipalities have been highlighted as facing landslide risks due to the rain, with 267 of those placed on red alert. This number has increased in recent days, particularly in the Andean regions. Muhamad also noted that Colombia’s hurricane season will begin in early June and could run until November.
